ABetterHalf.com's Donation to Charity

We've gotten a few questions about how we handle the donation process, so we've provided a few answers here.

How can you afford to do this?

It's simple. ABetterHalf.com is run by me. I have no employees and I don't outsource anything. I code the site, design it, market it, and everything in between. I have virtually no expenses and I don't care to frolic on the beach drinking expensive wine, so I donate a huge chunk of this site's advertising revenue to the charities my members want to help.

How do you decide which charities get what?

That's something that members decide. ABetterHalf.com measures support for each charity with a formula that takes into account (among other things) the number of accounts from supporters of each charity. For example, if 10 people support The Humane Society, that counts as 10 votes. If 15 people support Grassroot Soccer, that's 15 votes. And so on for all the charities. We divvy up 25% of the site's revenue accordingly on a percentage basis and cut checks to the charities once per year. As for the other 25% (since we give away 50% total), we hold a vote for 25 days that's open to everybody, not just members. The winner gets 15%, and the two runner-ups each get 5%.

How much does ABetterHalf.com earn?

Total revenue minus the 50% we give away minus expenses = what we keep. For simplicity, we won't send checks until we've raised at least $10,000 to spread around on a yearly basis. If we don't hit that in a year, the money will roll over to the next year so we'll already be ahead of the game.

Do members get to take a tax deduction?

No, sorry!

I work for or support a nationally accredited 501(c)(3) charity that's not listed on this site. How can I change that?

Please contact us and we'll explain the process in more detail.
